Looking to study abroad? The process of applying to colleges abroad can be quite over-whelming. This is because there are multiple steps to the process and various deadlines that you must adhere to. This blog will address the biggest question most students have when they consider applying abroad- Where do I start from?
Find something that interests you
The most important aspect of applying abroad is that it should be something that interests you. So, to start, develop and understand your interest. In order to do this, evaluate the career you are looking to have or which are the topics of what you are studying now interest you the most? If you are evaluating your career needs, brainstorm jobs by going to various company’s Careers pages, looking at the job opportunities and understanding what you need to study to get the one you want. If you’re looking to do a Masters program, you can also go to the websites of various colleges you are interested in and look at the courses they offer. For your Masters, you can explore something creative or interesting that will add value to your profile while also being a different and enjoyable experience.
Search for a course that highlights your topic of interest
Once you’ve evaluated the type of course you’re looking for, you’ll have to find the one that is right for you. This can be a longer process for Masters students because what you want may be very specific and hard to find or can be a course that has different names in many different colleges. For example: At the University of Edinburgh, the course- MSC in Comparative Literature may interest you, while at King’s College London, the course- MA Contemporary literature, Culture and Theory may also match your preference. While both courses are different, they share some similar interests that may be a part of what you’re currently studying or a part of the job you want later.
For this reason, looking for courses is not an easy job, especially when you are open to studying in different countries and have a long list of colleges that offer similar courses. This is exactly why Sable’s Admission Consulting is helpful. The consultants, while will go through a similar process as you, will be more experienced and aware. They will know which courses are good in which country and which college, narrowing down your options to only the top colleges that fit your exact interests. They will also be able to understand the course you are looking for better than you and be able to present various options that match your preferences. Otherwise, personally as a student looking for Masters courses, it took me ages to really understand the kind of course that would be perfect for me and which countries suit my goals and which don’t.
So,
Step 1- Make a list of course that you are interested in. Don’t decide according to country or college, just make a list of course that seem like the best possible next step for you.
What Next?
After you have assembled your first list of courses with colleges, the real work begins. Now, you have to further narrow down to the 7-8 best courses and then look at their list of requirements. You can read more about this stage in my next blog.
